It was sometimes referred to as "God?s Acre" and considered sacred ground. A Memorial Prayer Garden is an expression of Christian faith and love. It brings to all a message of assurance and of quiet peace, for it serves not only as a repository for cremains of Church members, but also as a garden of beauty and quiet for meditation. Location and Administration
W The Prayer Garden is located south of the Sanctuary Nave, West of the South Transept, adjacent to the Main Office. The Prayer Garden is accessible from either the Sanctuary, the South Transept, the South Transept Balcony, the South Nave, or the Campus Quadrangle, and is designed for use of the members of Central Church, their families and their friends. The Prayer Garden, including the Columbarium, (system of compartments for the inurnment of cremains or ashes) will also include a memorial wall where persons interred/inured elsewhere can be memorialized. Facility Features W Features of The Palms Memorial Prayer Garden will offer several options for those choosing to participate in this facility. The Columbarium is a permanently constructed structure within carefully selected areas of the Garden and contains individual repositories (compartments) for the inurnment of cremains. A Scatter Garden for cremated remains is available for those not choosing permanent placement of ashes in urns and compartments. The option of a Memorial Plaque may be selected in conjunction with scattered ashes, or for those who are buried elsewhere. The Memorial Wall is located on the south wall of the Garden. A Scattering Garden is also available within the facility for those who wish to have ashes scattered and represented by a memorial plaque. Design Distinctives W The facility is normally entered through wrought iron ceremonial gates off the quadrangle. Brick walkways provide easy access along the main columbarium walls, divided by planters and benches. A granite altar is located along the north west side, next to the Sanctuary and will be used for private committal services, as well as for memorial or prayer services. The center of the facility incorporates a beautiful weeping copper cross and pool, creating an appropriate atmosphere of tranquillity. Large shade trees and other appropriate plantings complete the natural setting.W Cremains compartments are designed four per square foot. Each compartment holds one or two sealed, engraved, bronze urns. Four compartments are covered by a square foot granite stone, secured to a Corrian structure. Each stone is scored into quarters and engraved with the name, birth date and death date of the interred. The stones, in dark red granite matching the color of roof tiles and brick, are affixed to the structure with bronze rosettes. W Each section consisting of 84 compartments is encased in a Spanish white facade wall. Wrought iron gates and fences are of flat black finish in keeping with the Spanish, mission style architecture of the church.
