Pastor's Sermon Topic
July 27, 2008 Sermon Title: When God Is in Charge?
A mustard seed, yeast, treasure, a merchant, a net-what could they possibly share in common? They each provide insight into the kingdom of heaven when/where God is in charge. Some Christians pounce on the phrase "end of the age" (13:49) as justification for dismissing any present relevance of the metaphors in this chapter. That may be true if the kingdom of heaven is only a future hope. But what if God's future is intended to be a guide and goad for us in the present? What if God intends the human heart to be an outpost for the kingdom? What then? Maybe we'd be better off paying attention to these metaphors than dismissing them out of hand. more |

Rosie's House has ended its first year of holding classes here at CUMC. We want to take this opportunity to thank the CUMC staff and congregation for the wonderful support and graciousness you have extended to our staff, Board, parents and students. It is overwhelming to see such an outpouring of affirmation and encouragement for our program. You will continue to see our staff working hard in our offices this summer; our students will return after Labor Day. On behalf of everyone here at Rosie's House, thank you so much for your willingness to house us here on your campus. We are SO grateful!! The Numbers DON'T Tell It All! Looking over the Serving the Homeless account since the beginning of 2008 there are some statistics that are of interest. Thus far from the beginning of 2008 to the end of May 2008 we have expended a little over twelve hundred dollars from and received a little more than that same amount in donations to the Serving the Homeless fund. On the spread sheet, the figures for expenses and donations are literally almost neck in neck right down the lines.
For those who may not know, we serve meals three times a month at the Watkin's Shelter as part of the United Methodist Outreach Mission in cooperation with the City of Phoenix. There are some 40 or 50 churches and organizations around the Valley that participate in this program so at least one church or group serves at the shelter every night of the month. more |

Tim Boyle Greetings
July 2008 Newsbrief Greetings from muggy Japan! Summer weather has set in here with a vengeance, just as it no doubt has where almost all of our readers are (though for a few in such places as New Zealand, it's winter.) There is not a whole lot of news to report, as we are simply plugging away in our varied ministries as before, with Tim concentrating on the work of the Buraku Liberation Center. One project we hope to soon get up and running smoothly is an English-language website. There are some pictures posted now that you are welcome to view. .... more
Terry & Muriel Henderson Eleuterio and Celia Jimenez, an elderly couple living in the village of Alchichica, Puebla, in South Central Mexico, are always open to receiving friends and strangers for a visit under the trees of their outdoor patio. They often share their faith through music, and they enjoy singing their favorite hymns in two-part harmony. Eleuterio and Celia have raised 12 children on their small parcel of land, feeding their family from the agricultural products they grew, mostly corn and beans, as well as the fruit from their 12 mango trees, one planted for each of their children. more |
